Nadina Angulo Hielscher
What significant personal obstacles has the nominee faced during their time at Utah Tech?
Nadina is neurodiverse and openly discusses this and how it feels to navigate in a neurotypical world. On top of full-time school, she has two small children at home and works as a case worker in the public school system. Additionally, Nadina is not a U.S. citizen, and because of this faces unique challenges of assimilating to a new culture.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
Nadina seeks mentorship whenever she faces challenges. She is willing to ask clarifying questions both in class and during office hours. In addition, she works very hard to succeed in everything she does. It has always been clear to me that she genuinely cares about her schoolwork and her learning. If she fails at something the first time, she gets the support she needs so that she excels the second time. She has also worked to make friends on campus, which has led to mutual opportunities for support with her peers.
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
In spite of all of the challenges Nadina faces, Nadina has a 4.0 and has participated in psychology research and other campus leadership roles such as helping to put on the Vagina Project each year and presenting at UCUR this month. She is now applying for graduate schools.
What strategies or qualities has the nominee used to find strength and keep moving forward?
She is organized, timely, and thorough. She has built support systems of humans that can help her both on and off campus.
How has the nominee’s journey impacted others in the Utah Tech community?
Nadina is an active leader in any and all educational settings that she is part of. Her fearlessness to ask for help is an example to the other students around her. She puts other students at ease by asking the questions everyone is thinking but no one wants to ask.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves the Grit Award?
Throughout her time as a psychology student, Nadina has persevered with passion and vision. She understands the value of education and where it can take her, and this has led to commitment through every challenge she has faced. She has achieved straight As during her time here, and has played an important role in various organizations on campus. She would be an excellent pick for this award!
Personality of the Year
Tyler Quincey
How has the nominee's unique character, enthusiasm, and positive attitude made a lasting impression on the Utah Tech community?
Tyler is not afraid to let his positive attitude and attributes be apparent. He works at the tutoring center, and is always trying to help his peers have fun studying. Tyler makes it fun to study, and even if I am having a bad day when I got to tutoring, I will be laughing by the time I leave. I have also seen his uplifting attitude at events especially the Mic Drop event last semester. He was one of the moderators and was sure to encourage his peers who were demonstrating their talents.
In what ways does the nominee confidently express their individuality?
Tyler is not afraid to be him. He very confidently expresses his joy about life. He adds a personal touch to tutoring, and is very personable. It is awesome that someone can be super chill and happy while tutoring and have fun at work. A lot of people are grumpy around finals, or pretty sleep deprived and not in a good mood. However, Tyler has kept uplifting spirits during finals and other stressful seasons of the semester demonstrating how to be uplifting even when times get stressful.
Tyler is also a member of the LGBTQ2+ community and is not afraid to share that. This inspires other students to embrace their uniqueness, and not be afraid to be different. He supports his peers to reach out and get help if needed for mental health and shares the campus's resources with his peers.
How has the nominee contributed to the positive morale of faculty, staff, and students on campus?
Tyler goes above and beyond when turning students. Unlike some other peer tutors, who you can tell are really just working to get paid, Tyler actually cares about his peers. He always starts his sessions with "how are you doing" not just "what are we working on today." Tyler is honest, hard working, personable, and is a perfect example of living the golden rule. His positive morale encourages others to have good values, and helps support the founding values of Utah Tech. Tyler does not just make sure that the people he tutors are doing well in school, he also checks in and ensures people are doing okay. He always says "you can do this" before exams, and this helps students who have testing anxiety or low confidence. Tyler truly cares about his peers and is empathetic.
How does the nominee exemplify the “Trailblazer Spirit” at Utah Tech?
A true trailblazer shows their own personality and lives their own life. They won't bend into peer pressure; they truly are true to themselves and press forward with and create their own trail. As a tutor Tyler has created a really fun tutoring sessions just by showing his personality. Even though lectures can be boring, and reading a textbook can be really tedious Tyler shows how a positive outlook can help a student having a bad day. He has showed his peers that they can blaze their own trail and keep a good attitude even if they are in a terrible class and have trouble with their studies.
His example shines farther then turning though, he is also a senator and leads by example supporting others to blaze their trials how they have chosen. One day I saw him wearing his senator badge, and I mentioned I always wanted to be a student senator. Tyler encouraged me to apply, and help represent the students of my department. He also shared how awesome it was to be involved in that. Tyler graduates this May, but his example and personality of fearlessness will continue to uplift and strength Utah Tech long after he is gone. He encourages other students that they can do it, which leads other students to have a Trailblazer Spirit.
What specific impact has the nominee had on the overall campus culture at Utah Tech?
Sometimes it is the day in and day out work of college that really wears students down. People can get tired and stop showing up to class or give up on good grades. However, Tyler encourages students to continue being them, take breaks from their studies and have fun, and live good lives. He understands how important education is, but he also understands how college can be really tough. His presence and personality especially at the tutoring center bring a love of learning. If I just cannot remember a vocabulary word no matter how hard I try, Tyler will come up with his own mnemonic which sometimes includes a funny action based mnemonic. It is so amazing someone can turn a hard class into a fun class just by being a tutor. This creates a culture of fun learning, and encourages his peers to live their best lives.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves to be recognized as the Personality of the Year?
Tyler is not afraid to let his uniqueness shine and makes learning fun as he tutors. His example of being involved helps other students want to step up and do something great like him. He has a very unique personality that really cannot be put into words, but he let's it shine at all times. He goes above and beyond as a tutor and a student showing how fun learning can be when someone adds a personal touch to studying. Despite the busy class schedules some of his peers have he reminds the people he tutors to remain them while in college and have fun. He supports others in their dreams and aspirations. He deserves to be recognized as personality of the year because his positive attitude brings joy to others days, and he reaches out and spreads kindness to others by remaining true to himself. He is awesome!

How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
Kate Pugmire has shown extraordinary commitment within multiple organizations on campus. She is the Education Senator for UTSA and represents all students in her college. She attends service projects and events on campus to meet all kinds of people. She has a 3.6 gpa and in the education program and attends her practicum classes every week impowering kids all around southern Utah. I believe she is the best candidate for this position.
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
She helps kids all around St. George during her practicum from the education program. She helps kids become their best selves no matter the age. She also volunteers at local service projects to help better the community.
In what ways has the nominee gone above and beyond their expected role within the organization, club, team, or department?
For UTSA she has created a relationships not only with her students but her facility as well. She has created and executed multiple incentives including getting more soap dispensers in the education building and getting a microwave and fridge for the students in the education program. She also helps organize events on campus like having multiple tabling events to ensure students have the best experience on campus.
How have the nominee’s efforts strengthened or elevated their organization, club, team, or department?
She has made the academic senate a safe place for students to feel good about their academic success.
How has the nominee’s work within this group reflected positively on Utah Tech as a whole?
She has helped so many students find their place on campus through the senate and the education program. She makes sure that all students have a place on campus.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves to be recognized for their exceptional commitment and contributions?
I believe she deserves this nomination because she is incredibly involved on campus and has the best intentions for all students on this campus. She truly is a trailblazer.

Bella Estes
How has the nominee served Utah Tech and the local community?
Bella has been an incredible asset to UT this past year. Her work with the legislature and the Utah Student Association has been incredible.
In what ways has the nominee actively contributed to multiple Utah Tech teams, clubs, or organizations?
She is part of UTSA, regularly attends club activities and service opportunities, she participates in intramurals, and is always going out of her way to help students belong on campus
How does the nominee advocate for Utah Tech and its mission?
Bella is a great example of someone who promotes the university's core values and supports student development.
In what ways does the nominee demonstrate leadership that enhances student success and benefits the university community?
Being the president of the Utah Student Association and working to advocate for students has been a top priority for Bella this year. She has been a kind an thoughtful leader.
Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?

Amy DeLaMare
What significant personal obstacles has the nominee faced during their time at Utah Tech?
Amy over came some demoralizing experiences at the start of her time in college. She had a teacher who essentially refused to teach her because it would be a heavy lift for that teacher. Due to that she came to UT and asked me to take her as a student and help her achieve her goal. She was filled with a lot of self doubt and negative self talk. These traits are fatal to a developing musician. She did not come from a high school experience where high achievement was modeled.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
Amy faced some of her setbacks and failures and decided that it wasn't going to be the end of her story. She was humble enough to accept frank assessment of the situation as she started back at UT. She didn't turn her back on the challenging curriculum. She worked to get grades to move forward. She took my advise on technique and musical expressiveness. She took my suggestion on how to practice and how much to practice.
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
Amy has buckled down to get the grades to steadily progress toward the bachelors degree. She has shown steady progress in each of the end of semester music jury, our final. She has become a more than capable musician on all of the percussion instruments. She improved from being someone that a director or two didn't want on important, high profile parts, to someone that they eagerly assign significant parts and roles.
What strategies or qualities has the nominee used to find strength and keep moving forward?
For a period recently Amy was her own support system. Her parents spent years in Australia on an LDS mission. During this time Amy assumed a rescue support role with a brother who had a hard time staying sober. She used the negative example to remind her of her ambitions goals to achieve. She reached out to me seeking more detailed strategies on how to deal with and overcome "stage fright". We have spent a lot of time discussing and exploring the psychology of musical performance. It's rewarding to see her share these concepts with younger students now.
How has the nominee’s journey impacted others in the Utah Tech community?
Amy has become a leader in the Music Dept. She mentors younger students. She gives advise in academic settings and campus life settings. She is a reliable member of several musical groups on campus. She helps set the standard of preparation and professionalism. She helps others handle to non-musical aspects of being a music major too.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves the Grit Award?
In the spring of 2024 Amy and I set goals for her capstone course, the Senior Recital. It was my professional evaluation that she would need to perform it following spring break of 2025. Her work over the summer and fall of 2024 made it clear that the late semester recital we had scheduled was not needed. Her efforts made it clear that she was ready for the recital much earlier. She performed a wonderful senior recital in January of 2025. In my first lessons with her I thought it very possible that we would never reach this goal. I now describe her success as one of my best and most treasured success stories. She went from struggling, to surviving, to succeeding, to surpassing.

How has the nominee served Utah Tech and the local community?
(Volunteer) President of UTPS (Utah Tech Premedical Society) “premed” Club
- Help to organize for the involvement of university premedical students in shadowing MCI (mass casualty incident)
training events and volunteered as a casualty at an MCI at the St George Regional Airport
- Coordinate with SWUPHD (Southwest Utah Public Health Department) MRC (Medical Reserve Corps) for Stop the
Bleed training to be offered to premedical students at Utah Tech on two (potentially three) occasions
- Organize and host MCAT (medical college acceptance test) practice examinations; regular seminars led by
physicians and other professionals; and service projects at the Utah Food Bank, Rock Steady Boxing, and
Children’s Museum.
- Advertise and manage an application to intern at the St George Regional Hospital.

He demonstrates all the attributes required for this award: serving his alma mater and community, being actively involved in clubs and organizations, supporting students academically as well as attending extracurricular events, while maintaining his grades. This is an extraordinary multitalented young man who selflessly helps when ever he can and is definitely worthy of this award.

Madison Bulloch
How has the nominee served Utah Tech and the local community?
I would like to nominate Madison Bulloch for the Student of the Year Award. Madison is the founder of the UTU Neuroscience Club and volunteers with Senior Living. As a Biomedical Biology major, Madison has accomplished a lot, including multiple conference presentations and research work.
She is also a Chemistry Research Fellow at UT. She completed her research under the mentorship of Dr. Rico Del Sesto, including working on patented ionic liquids. She presented this research at the San Diego Emerald Conference, UT Trailblazer Symposium, UT Chemistry Symposium, and UT SPARK in 2024. She plans to present her research at the SUU UCUR and West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Symposium in Spring 2025. Her research has had a significant impact on the field of biology and brought prestige to UT.
In what ways has the nominee actively contributed to multiple Utah Tech teams, clubs, or organizations?
Madison is a current member of various clubs and organizations including the Utah Tech Chemistry Club, and the American Chemical Society, and is a founding member of the UTU Neuroscience Club.
How does the nominee advocate for Utah Tech and its mission?
Madison is a brilliant student scholar, presenting her research at professional conferences. Her effort and accomplishment are the embodiment of our university's mission - Active Learning. Active Life. Madison has participated in many events hosted by the UT Biology Department including various poster sessions where she received the top placement for the Spring 2024 biology session.
In what ways does the nominee demonstrate leadership that enhances student success and benefits the university community?
Madison is a member of the Japanese Culture Club. She served as a TA and helped create an ideal learning environment for the junior members. She even flew to Canada to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test in July and successfully passed. She has helped international students from Japan adapt to a new lifestyle in St. George and willingly offered them a helping hand.
Besides her outstanding professional qualifications, Madison is a very warm, polite, modest, and exceptionally fine person. I would also like to emphasize her friendly, courteous, and cooperative nature. Madison has a strong sense of responsibility for work, leadership skills within a group, and great respect for others. Regardless of her academic achievements, what I think makes Madison special is her positive attitude and effect on the people around her. When she was taking my courses, she was always willing to help her classmates, and excited to participate in various discussions. She played an important role in creating an inclusive learning environment. I got to know her outside of the classroom and believe her to be an accountable, persistent, and goal-oriented student.
Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
There are countless reasons why Madison is deserving of this award. For example, Madison presented at the San Diego Emerald Conference, along with her fellow researchers, as the only undergraduates to ever attend this professional conference. Additionally, Madison has received national recognition from SkillsUSA and FBLA in competitions in medical terminology and healthcare administration, respectively. Therefore, I believe this outstanding student is deserving of the Student of the Year award.

Harmons Pharmacy #61 has supported my family and students on various occasions. Pharmacists are so sincere and knowledgeable and know exactly what patients need. The pharmacy's reception clerks are equally sincere and support patients/customers mentally. Such an amazing team to be recognized.
In what ways has this partner advanced the mission and goals of Utah Tech University?
Compared with other pharmacies, Harmons Pharmacy values each patient/customer and tries to give the best possible solution.
What unique contributions has this partner made that set them apart as an extraordinary supporter of Utah Tech students?
One of my students who was an international student needed prescription refills; however, her doctors in Japan failed to renew the medication. It could put her in a life-threatening situation. Then, pharmacists authorized emergency refills for her, which saved her life. They do care about their customers' well-being. They are working with pride and a strong sense of responsibility. Thus, I truly believe they should be recognized.
What impact has this community partner’s involvement had on the Utah Tech and St. George/Southwest Utah community?
Harmons Pharmacy #61 has served the St. George/Southwest Utah community for a long time, they have supported the UT students in various ways.

Harmons Pharmacy #61 has provided invaluable and distinguished service to our community, and their commitment to the community should be formally recognized. Therefore, I'm nominating Harmons Pharmacy #61 for the Community Partners of the Year Award.
Stafford Student Involvement Award
Garrett Olsen
How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
I would like to nominate Mr. Garrett Olsen for the Stafford Student Involvement Award. Garrett was one of the top finalists for this award due to his extraordinary commitment to the Japanese Culture Club. Garrett currently serves as the Event Coordinator of the JCC. Hosting a weekly meeting and offering a variety of activities, the JCC became one of the most active student clubs on campus.
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
Beyond the club activity, Garrett has been the most respected and beloved Teaching Assistant of all. He understands the importance of teamwork and shows a strong ability and desire to help other students. Especially, by introducing the shadowing method and demonstrating its effectiveness, he contributed to drastically improving the conversation skills of the students in the lower-division Japanese courses. Analyzing the weaknesses of students in the lower division course, he created several lesson plans along with easy-to-follow quiz preparation materials.
Garrett was indeed the recipient of the “Student with GRIT (2024)” – an award presented to a student who has faced and overcome significant personal obstacles and found the strength and ability to succeed in their educational pursuits. Despite suffering from some degree of hearing impairment, he always strives for the best and keeps inspiring people around him.
In what ways has the nominee gone above and beyond their expected role within the organization, club, team, or department?
As I observed his way of dealing with other students, it became apparent to me that Garrett knows how to explain things effectively and teach others very well. Indeed, he has played an important role in creating an inclusive learning environment where everyone feels respected and valued. This is the reason why his teamwork, communication, and explanatory skills are well received by the class and those whom he has helped including exchange students from Japan and the Club members. Serving as a Teaching Assistant, he was awarded “Service Learning Certificates” for two consecutive semesters due to his distinguished service to the university and the community.
How have the nominee’s efforts strengthened or elevated their organization, club, team, or department?
Since Garrett became the Event Coordinator of the JCC, the membership has continued to grow as he effectively uses social media for the recruitment effort. He's a crucial member of the club.
How has the nominee’s work within this group reflected positively on Utah Tech as a whole?
Garret is a person with strong determination. Inspired by his father, Garrett desires to teach English to Japanese schoolchildren utilizing his knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. Garrett even traveled to the University of Alberta in Canada to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in July 2024 and successfully passed N5. His outstanding achievement was highlighted in the College Newsletter. Garrett is currently preparing to take N4 to demonstrate his commitment to participating in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program after graduation. Garret has been a role model not only to his classmates but also to club members.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves to be recognized for their exceptional commitment and contributions?
Garrett’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the classroom. He constantly self-studies and tirelessly works to maintain and refine his Japanese language skills, which helps him remain the most distinguished student of all. In addition to his academic achievements, Garrett is a multi-talented and insightful person. He has the ability to manage and organize his time and schedule around various activities without having them interfere with his schoolwork. One of Garrett’s greatest strengths is his ability to work with different types of students. He does respect others’ opinions, he likes to share ideas, he sincerely cares about others’ problems, and he gives others a helping hand. Garrett has a strong sense of responsibility for the work, leadership for the group, and great respect for others. Particularly, because of his diligence and gentle personality, he is respected and admired by all who know him. Therefore, I strongly believe Garret deserves the Stafford Student Involvement Award more than anyone else.

Shoko Domoto
Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
Shoko is a member of FUSION - the premier song and dance performing team for Utah Tech University. Despite being an international student, she perfectly sang the American National Anthem on several occasions.
How has the nominee demonstrated exemplary talent, skill, and dedication in their chosen discipline?
Being a vocalist, Shoko was selected through an extensive audition process. FUSION performs internationally and throughout the United States at school, community, civic, and alumni events, and provides service outreach to care and rehab centers.
In what ways has the nominee served as a representative of Utah Tech in the public eye through performances or entertainment?
Recent tours have taken FUSION members to Japan, China, Hawaii, New York, Philadelphia, Costa Rica, Texas, Washington D.C., and throughout the western United States. For highlights, team insights, and updates about FUSION, please check out our social media!
Can you list some of the performance opportunities the nominee has had this school year?
Shoko is a dedicated student. Although she has hours of training sessions, she maintains perfect attendance. Her determination is truly admirable.
How has the nominee demonstrated a strong commitment to a Utah Tech group, ensemble, or department?

How has the nominee's unique character, enthusiasm, and positive attitude made a lasting impression on the Utah Tech community?
I would like to nominate Sarah Cowdell for the Personality of the Year award because her positive attitude has made a lasting impression on her classmates and the Utah Tech community. She was the kindest and most diligent student among those who took my HIST1700 courses in the Fall of 2024.
In what ways does the nominee confidently express their individuality?
While no one volunteered to be a notetaker for their peers, Sarah willingly accepted the role as a notetaker and helped her peers successfully pass HIST1700 (a General Education course required for graduation). Her kindness made a big difference to them.
How has the nominee contributed to the positive morale of faculty, staff, and students on campus?
Sarah demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility. She never skipped a class, was never late, or never missed any assignments. She inspired people around her, and she was beloved by her classmates for her gentle personality. I assure you that Sarah has contributed to the positive morale of faculty and students on campus.

Sarah demonstrated resilience, dedication, generosity, and open-mindedness. She does exemplify the "Trailblazer Spirit."
What specific impact has the nominee had on the overall campus culture at Utah Tech?
Sarah showed empathy, compassion, and kindness to everyone regardless of their background. Sarah is a great asset to the UT community as a whole. Some students called her "Saint Sarah" considering what she has done for her classmates.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves to be recognized as the Personality of the Year?
I strongly believe that Sarah deserves to be recognized as the Personality of the Year. It would be the best way to have the campus community know that we have such a selflessly generous student.

Kybin Al-Mosawi
How has the nominee's unique character, enthusiasm, and positive attitude made a lasting impression on the Utah Tech community?
Kybin is the embodiment of perseverance, passion, and enthusiasm here at Utah Tech. He's an incredibly motivated individual who is always striving to level up his personal skillset while also being a team player. He is collaborative as a student, always connecting with his peers to make their experience on campus lively. He also holds himself to a high standard as a student leader, looking to leave Utah Tech better in his wake and invite both community and students alike to join in the trailblazer journey.
In what ways does the nominee confidently express their individuality?
When you meet Kybin you can't help but be affected by his bright personality and cheerleader spirit. He is one of those people that strives to connect with others in a genuine way. You can find Kybin cheering on our student athletes in the Stampede student section, intently studying anatomy in the Holland, or even performing on stage at a traditional student event. Nothing scares this guy, because he looks at every experience as an opportunity.
How has the nominee contributed to the positive morale of faculty, staff, and students on campus?
As Kybin connects with both faculty, staff and students he leads with gratitude. I've never been around someone so helpful and genuine in their connections. He keeps morale positive around campus by being positive himself, but also gracious with himself and others when some days may not feel as positive. He is honest and kind about understanding that reality of life as well.
How does the nominee exemplify the “Trailblazer Spirit” at Utah Tech?
Kybin is trailblazer spirit. This is a student who participates in class discussions and brings a realness to a conversation. He loves to read educational/motivational books that challenge his way of thinking. It's these small habits in Kybin's personal life that he brings to our campus. He connects with his peers and mentors and invites them into his journey while creating a community of passion and grit around him.
What specific impact has the nominee had on the overall campus culture at Utah Tech?
You cannot work with the Stampede Student section without encountering fantastic student leaders, and Kybin is one of them. He has strived to build a culture of real fun and excitement that extends outside of the Burns Arena and into every class he is apart of, club event he attends, service projects he participates in and more.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves to be recognized as the Personality of the Year?
I believe this nominee deserves to be recognized as the Personality of the Year because he has ten-fold made my experience on this campus better. Kybin wants to grow and challenge himself and be his best human every day, but that determination NEVER stops him from sharing a kind moment with a peer, checking in on a co-worker about their day, inviting a stranger to an activity, or serving someone around him. It's the humility I see in Kybin that makes him so deserving of this award. That personality of his is a bright light and one that makes be excited to just be a cheerleader in the story of his life, because he is onto great things.
Student of the Year
Bella Estes
How has the nominee served Utah Tech and the local community?
Belle has been an incredible student leader on our campus this year, and in prior years! In addition to her role as the Student Body President, where she has served as a strong voice for students on the Board of Trustees, Bella has also been this year's President of the Utah Student Association (USA). In her service as USA she has overseen the direction of all student body presidents across the state, led an initiative at the State Legislature to protect student fees, and has been the first sitting student body president from Utah Tech to chair the USA in recent years.
This year Bella led the Student Fee Board, where she was able to maintain student vision for a new Student Union while juggling multiple requests for increases to fees. This feat is no easy task, and she stood her ground in the fees that took cuts in order to maintain a sum zero increase to overall fees.
Additionally, Bella is a great student who lives our university values and is an ultimate Trailblazer! In her work with neurodiverse students she continues to mentor and build those around her. She can often be found cheering in the student section, attending a service project, or simply visiting with a student on campus.
Not all students can handle the pressures Bella has this year, and she has continually excelled at being a top tier SBP for Utah Tech.
In what ways has the nominee actively contributed to multiple Utah Tech teams, clubs, or organizations?
As the Student Body President, Bella has contributed numerous hours of dedication. From representing students at the highest level, to actively attending and serving at events and service projects.
How does the nominee advocate for Utah Tech and its mission?
She lives our motto of active learning. active life. by always pushing herself. This year Bella served on the hiring committee for our new university president, was the President for the Utah Student Association (state level), and a Board of Trustee member.
In what ways does the nominee demonstrate leadership that enhances student success and benefits the university community?
Her work on student fees has laid the foundation for future students to have a new Student Union Building. Bella also is a vibrant leader who has supported students at all levels.
Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
It is one thing to be a Student Body President, and that in and of its self is an amazing accomplishment. However, Bella rose above and was an EXCEPTIONAL student body president. Fighting hard to maintain her voice and seat at the table on the hiring committee for President Smeed, being the elected voice for students. Advocating and being elected to serve as the President of the Utah Student Association, and representing ALL students on the importance of student fees to the State Legislature.
Entertainer of the Year
Mia Butikofer
Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
To put it frankly, Mia is dedicated, hard working, and exponentially remarkable. She is skilled and talented beyond compare, yet humble and compassionate. She is able to bring joy to others by simply doing what she loves, and does best: performing. Mia has danced her whole life, and effortlessly puts her heart and soul into every step that she takes. The passion she moves with, and work she puts into being a master at her craft is an honor to get to experience.
How has the nominee demonstrated exemplary talent, skill, and dedication in their chosen discipline?
Throughout Mia's time on the Blaze Dance Team, she has had the opportunity to represent the University at events at local elementary schools, fundraisers off campus for the team and, even on international recruitment trips for the university. Mia is an excellent example of what the pride of our university stands for and never fails to bring up how much it means to be able to build new paths as a Trailblazer.
In what ways has the nominee served as a representative of Utah Tech in the public eye through performances or entertainment?
Mia was able to travel to Japan and perform at multiple high schools and universities to show just how great it is to be a student at Utah Tech. She has also been able to perform at Welcome Wednesday, the Senior Games, every tailgate event for the community, all home football games, every home basketball game, and even at the Raider Stadium, in front of thousands of people while she cheered on our football team against UNLV.
Can you list some of the performance opportunities the nominee has had this school year?
Mia has been on the Blaze Dance Team for 2 years now, and takes every opportunity she can to express her love and gratitude for not only her teammates but for her school as well. She loves to proudly wear her UT and Blaze gear to any and all events that she can, in hopes it will spark a conversation about something she holds so dearly in her heart.
How has the nominee demonstrated a strong commitment to a Utah Tech group, ensemble, or department?
The fiery passion in every hip hop routine, and tear-jerking emotion in every lyrical performance, keeps all eyes on Mia in every routine that she is in. She can manage to pull anyone's attention with one swift movement, and hold that attention for longer than you would ever think. Mia has the capabilities to draw you in as the observer, and keep you there without even trying. Each and every performance in Japan, left her with a flock of people rushing to her side to give her a compliment and ask for a picture with her. The Blaze clinics leave Mia with a crowd of young women dying to learn from her and be just like her when they grow up. But most importantly, her highlighted moments in the dance teams competition routines, surely helped the Blaze bring home their first ever 1st place national title and championship.

Mia emulates exactly what an experienced entertainer should do: she makes the people that get the opportunity to watch her, feel something. Whether that is joy, sadness, longing, peace, passion, or love, she has the talent to recreate it. It is a truly beautiful experience to get to watch someone live so purely, and wholeheartedly themself, while making it look so angelic all at the same time. Mia is someone that will be an entertainer for the rest of her life and will not ever limit herself to it simply a title or award, but rather a way to live.

I would like to nominate Cappeletti's Restaurant for the Community Partners of the Year award. Offering homemade dishes at an affordable price, UT students and faculty enjoy healthy meals.
In what ways has this partner advanced the mission and goals of Utah Tech University?
Cappeletti's Restaurant's philosophy: "Our philosophy is uncomplicated. We cook good food with the freshest of ingredients like mama used to make."
They committed to offer food with fresh ingredients, necessary for "Active" and healthy "Life."
What unique contributions has this partner made that set them apart as an extraordinary supporter of Utah Tech students?
Cappeletti's is family oriented and embodies ideal family values. Indeed, all of their children attended Utah Tech University.
Cappeletti's opened in the summer of 2010 in the St. George Downtown area. The restaurant is owned and operated by Andres & Lorena Cappeletti and their 3 children, Facundo, Matteo, and Lara. Both Andres and Lorena have been cooking since childhood, cultivating a love for homemade pastas and unique sauces over the years. Andres prepares every dish daily with the same passion his mama Emilia used to teach him as a little boy. He named one of the favorites dishes of the menu after his mom, "Emilia's aglio chicken". The restaurant offers Italian cuisine with an Argentine flair.

Cappeletti's Restaurant has provided the UT and St. George community a cozy place to enjoy lunch and dinner. Job candidates were often taken to the restaurant, and they all loved the restaurant.

Student of the Year
Isabella Estes
How has the nominee served Utah Tech and the local community?
Not only has Bella served Utah Tech as both the president of the Utah Tech Ambassadors and UTSA during the majority of her college career, but she has also made a personal impact on so many students at Utah Tech. She has always been the schools #1 advocate at a high levels during the presidential hiring committee and board of trustees, but she has also served the St. George community as a whole through her commitment to service and to the students of Utah Tech who call this place their home.
In what ways has the nominee actively contributed to multiple Utah Tech teams, clubs, or organizations?
Bella is the student body president, former Ambassador president, and member of many clubs and organizations here on campus. Although she jokes about how her only hobby is, and I quote, "Utah Tech", this has enabled her to participate and show support in many different organizations on campus due to their connection to the university. As I pride myself in student involvement here on campus, it is surprising that I have witnessed her at multiple club and organization events events with BSU, Birds Aren't Real, Basketball Club at Blazer blast, Alumni Ambassador events, the UT Tree Lighting, Zions Edge Martial Arts, and UT Knights just to name a few, despite her busy position as the student body president.
How does the nominee advocate for Utah Tech and its mission?
I believe Bella lives many of the universities goals and values, but above all I believe that she encompasses the Opportunity and Belonging aspect that Utah Tech provides. Not only has she taken more opportunities here at this university more than any other student, but she has also given back more than she has taken, creating opportunities and creating a sense of belonging through her new spearheading on newly established positions on UTSA, her personal investment in creating more opportunities for students on a professional level, and creating that sense of culture throughout the many student groups she is a part of.
In what ways does the nominee demonstrate leadership that enhances student success and benefits the university community?
Bella demonstrates leadership through the personal connections that she creates, as well as the people she is able to pool together for local initiatives and community wellness. A good example of this is her constant networking with faculty, community members, and students, which has led to many bridges being built. For example, her networking in class has allowed me to meet David Bradford, who I've been able to work with since, creating great job opportunities. I have also gotten to meet Katrina, a fellow St. George community member starting an initiative on the impact of distracted driving. Both of these opportunities I got through Bella's dedication to connecting with people and bridging gaps between those connections.
Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
In my years not only as a Utah Tech student but a native to southern Utah, I have never seen someone more passionate and strong willingness towards the things they care deeply for more than Bella Estes.
Family of the Year
Smith (The Smith Family)
How has this family shown extraordinary personal or academic support to their Utah Tech student(s)?
The Smith family has shown support for the university in aspects that go beyond the responsibilities and expectations of a trailblazer family. The entire family engages in all of the symphonic band concerts and events (yes, all the kids too), which has created such a great impact on showing these students how important they are to the family. It is important to know that this has an effort of the family as a whole, and to say otherwise would discredit not only the effort of the parents of the Smith's, but to the efforts of their children as well.
In what ways has this family contributed to the Utah Tech community beyond supporting their own student(s)?
Not only does Heather and Bryant show their love and support to their child and student Isaac Smith, but to many others at the university as well. Isaac is a member of the Utah Tech symphonic band, the very band that Dr. Smith directs. Both Bryant and Heather support all of their band students not only in the classroom, but in all academic, personal and life advice. Bryant is not only a professor, but a lifelong mentor to all who he teaches. Many of the students call Heather "mom" or "band mom" due to her frequent visits to both the classroom and performances, which just shows how strong this support is.
How has this family supported the St. George/Southwest Utah community as a whole?
Both Bryant and Heather engage the community frequently. The symphonic band, with the support of Dr. Smith, gets to engage not only in the classroom, but with community bands, local performances and collaboration, graduation performances, hosting and performing with high schools, and learning from music teachers all throughout the state of Utah. Dr. Smith frequently makes Utah Tech the center of music collaboration in St. George and Southern Utah. This is also expanded when you see the amount of alumni and community members join the band, providing even more connections and learning opportunities to students in the classroom and an outlet for musicians of the St. Geroge community to both support and be supported by the band. Heather only expands upon this, often inviting study abroad alumni and students alike to events that bring them together.
How has this family’s involvement positively impacted other Utah Tech students or faculty members?
The Smith's not only positively impact students within Dr. Smith's classroom, but of students as a whole. The family supports Utah Tech students and faculty through their participation at both sporting events and at graduation. The Smiths mentor students that support not only their own department, but other organizations throughout the school as well, creating a ripple effect that is often unrecognized. The family isn't always just supporting them through their presence alone, but in the past the musical family has joined in as participating players when needed.
In what ways has this family demonstrated a strong commitment to Utah Tech’s mission and values?
The Smith's demonstrate not only a collaborative culture through participation in events, the classroom, and within their own home, but they also embody the importance of this collaborative culture through a support of a polytechnic sense of learning. The majority of the students that the Smith's support are not within Dr. Bryant Smith's college. Through this engagement of students from all parts of the university, Smith family fosters academic success, continued learning and a sense of belonging to all of Utah Tech, not just to faculty and students within the music program.
Why do you believe this family is deserving of this award for extraordinary support?
Not many entire families are as engaged and supportive of the university as the Smiths. Both Kyle and Isaac played in the college symphonic and marching bands to fill in gaps support the new program even before they were at the university. They were also able to provide their services during the Utah Tech Music tour in Mexico, proving invaluable to the purpose and mission of the trip. Isaac, due to this support, is now a member of the band and helps us full time. Bryant, along with the support of his wife and two daughters, continuously support the students of Utah Tech both inside and outside the classroom. This is and will be reflected not only in the academic performance of these students, but also in their future wellbeing and lifelong connection to the Smith family.

Sam New
What significant personal obstacles has the nominee faced during their time at Utah Tech?
Sam has faced major financial difficulties this year and hasn't let it slow him down in the least. He has been proactive in his organization and brainstorming efforts to remedy the situation. He continues to be self-sufficient, while utilizing resources. He is one of the most generous and positive people I have ever met. He continually looks out for the wellbeing of others and often puts his family, friends, and other students before himself. With all of these efforts, Sam now has a better handle on his finances and is blessing the lives of so many students through his position in student government.

Naji Runs Through
How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
Naji has been a driving force behind the Indigenous Student Organization (ISO) this year. With all of the changes that occurred due to HB 261, she has stepped up and been a tremendous leader.
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
Naji personally led the efforts to change the Miss Native pageant to be a ISO Ambassador Pageant. She opened up the criteria to include males and females and organized an amazing event. This event is an amazing way for our campus to learn about culture and customs of indigenous tribes and it is one of my most favorite events of the year. In addition, the ISO Ambassador will be a huge asset to share the message of Utah Tech and recruit students to our university. She did all of this with hardly any help from the University. She also fundraiser in order to purchase the prizes for this year. Finally, she handmade the sash for the winner. She is phenomenol.
In what ways has the nominee gone above and beyond their expected role within the organization, club, team, or department?
Please see the answer above. In addition, Naji and her club have held regular events this year, often partnering with other clubs across campus. She is definitely contributing to the overall sense of belonging across campus.
How have the nominee’s efforts strengthened or elevated their organization, club, team, or department?
Some of the clubs that were being supported by the Center for Inclusion and Belonging are limping along this year. Due to Naji's efforts, ISO is thriving.
How has the nominee’s work within this group reflected positively on Utah Tech as a whole?
Spreading cultural awareness on campus and university awareness off campus.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves to be recognized for their exceptional commitment and contributions?
I have known Naji for four years. The growth she has experienced this year has been phenomenal. She truly is someone who is making considerable contributions to our campus. I am so proud of her!
The Grit Award
Angel Clark
What significant personal obstacles has the nominee faced during their time at Utah Tech?
During this academic year, Angel has experienced homelessness, food scarcity, technology scarcity, being stuck in Page, AZ with no transportation, and many other hardships.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
I have never met anyone with the same level of GRIT that Angel possesses. Most students would give up with only have of the hardships Angel has experienced. In spite of everything, Angel continues to persist. She is willing to ask for help and she is continually trying to better her situation. Currently, she received wonderful midterm grades and I am so proud of her. I can't even believe she is continuing to persist and do well.
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
Angel was homeless and stuck in Page, AZ during fall semester without a car or means to support herself. Despite those difficulties, she kept in touch with her professors the best she could. She continued to try and better her situation and continue moving forward. Although she was not able to pull out most of her grades during fall semester, she is currently working on an exception to policy. In addition, she has now been able to move to St. George and is doing so much better this semester.
What strategies or qualities has the nominee used to find strength and keep moving forward?
She and her mother have both moved to St. George. They are both working and have a stable place to live. Angel continues to work with her current professors and meets with the Dean of Students on a semi regular basis. She is utilizing FAFSA and other scholarships available to Indigenous peoples. Angel is extremely bright and catches on to things quickly. She is utilizing all of her resources and is now in a place where she is seeing some academic success.
How has the nominee’s journey impacted others in the Utah Tech community?
Most of Angel's journey has been on her own. She was initially only taking online courses and her struggles only impacted herself and her professors. Now she is taking in person courses and getting more involved.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves the Grit Award?
Again, I have never seen someone struggle with as many trials as Angel and still come out with a positive spirit and a "I can do it" attitude. I am so extremely amazed and impressed by her GRIT and perserverance.
The Grit Award
James Cates
What significant personal obstacles has the nominee faced during their time at Utah Tech?
James attended school at Utah Tech beginning in fall 2014. His academic performance was subpar during his first semester in which James obtained a 0.563 GPA. James returned for his second semester on academic warning, but he did not make significant improvement and remained on academic probation for the next three semesters. James continued to try and try. After four semesters, James posted a cumulative GPA of 0.934. He wasn’t able to continue attending Utah Tech after the fall of 2015.
James encountered challenges with balancing his class schedule and serving in the Marine Corps during his second attempt at Utah Tech in the spring of 2022. He continually had to travel for military commitments one weekend each month while in class. James’ commitment prohibited studying and completing homework while on duty.
James had additional challenges understanding class instruction. He was unable to reach out to fellow students while on duty in the Marine Corps. He was not able to reach out to professors when he wanted to. He attended school with much less time to study and to reach out to peers and his professors while on duty.
James does not have many family ties. He was unable to receive much of the support that many students have from their families. He lived on his own for 2.5 years without having a vehicle to take him home to his family. He had to pay for every life necessity.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
James showed grit by continuing to pursue his education for three more semesters in 2015 despite his dismal academic performance during his first semester in fall 2014.
James showed outstanding grit in choosing to return to Utah Tech in the spring of 2022, even though he had to begin his second attempt at Utah Tech under academic probation.
James had to learn to do his homework early, plan for study time, and stay mentally and emotionally strong while returning to class after physically, mentally, and emotionally intense experiences with the Marine Corps.
James had to become much more organized and intentional in his education. He demonstrated heightened dedication, training, maturity, discipline, proactiveness, and he became a goal-oriented individual. James leaned that he had to plan to succeed.
James made the students and fellow Veterans at Utah Tech his family. He found solace in the Veteran’s Club and church groups. These student groups helped James with life challenges.
James reached out to others and helped many to feel included as the Veteran’s Club President.
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
James showed significant improvement during his return semester and posted a 3.7 GPA, which returned him to good standing at Utah Tech! James continued to perform well academically. James’ second attempt at Utah Tech resulted in graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice in fall 2024 with a cumulative GPA of 3.1587!
James finished as a strong student which is marked by three semesters with credit loads near 20 credits. This is significant when compared to his past academic probation status.
James continued to serve his country well, which is demonstrated in his selection as officer in Marine Corps!
What strategies or qualities has the nominee used to find strength and keep moving forward?
James discovered several principles that now guide his life:
1. James learned the value of focusing his attention at whatever he is doing, whether in class or planning club events. His focused attention skills are evident in his communication with others.
2. James understands his weaknesses and strengths and has become more apt to making proper decisions. This was shown by his choices to take proper classes that fit with his strengths.
3. James’ humility has led to utilizing vital on-campus resources which contributed significantly to his academic success.
4. James learned the value of having and being a friend. He found friendships and relationships among his peers at Utah Tech. He treats his friends as family!
5. James gained much motivation for success by seeing the rewards of perseverance.
How has the nominee’s journey impacted others in the Utah Tech community?
James served Utah Tech students and veterans as the Veteran’s Club President from fall 2023 to the present day. James is compassionate and holds empathy for his fellow students who are under achieving and live a difficult life. He is active in club events, engaged with peers in his classes, and constantly involved in new student mentorship. James welcomes all who he meets and encourages them to be their better selves. He has found significant influence among his fellow student Veterans and had helped this unique population to feel like they belong.
James’ continual engagement with others reflects his genuine concern for them. He is an example of kindness to strangers and a true friend at the first encounter with someone new. His empathy and compassion results from his own life’s trials and challenges. His trials with poor academic performance and struggles as a Marine have given James an upper hand with addressing hard moments in life and he is completely willing to help others develop their own grit as they grind through their own unique troubles.

James persevered through academic probation, stressful service as a US Marine, and loneliness as a student with little family. He continued to grind through the challenges that accompany life as a single student with few ties outside of student life. His tenacity at turning around from a poor academic start in his early academic career to becoming a student leader among his peers and fellow Veteran students, as well as the meaningful impact he has had on his community and country as a US Marine and leader at club events, demonstrates resilience and determination to never quit. James is a man of true grit!

Yes, he has served Utah tech in many different ways being involved in almost everything on campus. He is an ambassador, gives tours to the public, does service hours for the community and is also a personal trainer here on campus for campus recreation.
In what ways has the nominee actively contributed to multiple Utah Tech teams, clubs, or organizations?
Has participated in all intramural sports, worked for intramurals and campus rec as a personal trainer, is an ambassador here on campus. Multiple times a week he is here 9am to 9pm on campus doing his schoolwork and making and impact on others everywhere he goes

Active learning and active life is how I would describe Caden strong. I have never met a person more worthy of being a student of the year than him because he takes the mission to heart. He is active in so many different organizations and gives back to the students here and the community. People know he and people love him. He is a great student, mentor, and friend

He goes to communities around the state of Utah recruiting students to come here and always talks highly of the university. He is actively involved in the local community as well especially helping immensely with telling people about the presidential search

She literally lives her life in the public eye. As the head cheerleader for the past few years, she is so well respected by not only her team, but everyone who interacts with her.

By being positive, and keeping everyone focused as we got a new coach, and took the cheer team in a new direction this year.

Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
Ernesto is not only working on the homestretch of a Music Education degree but also performs and writes his own music for benefit concerts and side-hustles outside of school! He is totally dedicated to music education and performance and is living the career of a music producer before graduation.
How has the nominee demonstrated exemplary talent, skill, and dedication in their chosen discipline?
Considering alone that he is applying what he has learned through Utah Tech to the work he is doing outside of school, he is living the motto “active learning, active life” in plain view of the music community in southern Utah.
In what ways has the nominee served as a representative of Utah Tech in the public eye through performances or entertainment?
Ernesto has released songs and albums to public platforms within the past year. In addition, recently asked me to try out for the keyboardist in his own band for a benefit concert gig (I can’t recall what the band or gig was for, but it was all volunteer - no pay). He’s performed at Couchstock for several years on end here on campus, and I’ve been to several of the concerts he’s put on in the community - for free - and I’ve always had a good time!
Can you list some of the performance opportunities the nominee has had this school year?
He is an amazing classmate. He is so kind and fun to work with, and the classes I’ve had with him have been either choir or a small class of 5-7 students - classes that involve a lot of collaboration. He’s never negative, and always supportive and bright when I talk to him in class or see him in the hallways.
How has the nominee demonstrated a strong commitment to a Utah Tech group, ensemble, or department?
He’s made performance ensemble classes and music major classes a joy to be in. In his own performing in classes and outside of school, he knows stage presence better than most people I know. He maintains a stage confidence that helps an audience feel connected and have a good experience. Every concert and performance I’ve seen him do, he’s engaging and holds his role as a vocalist in every genre well.
How has the nominee’s presence or performance impacted the Utah Tech community and/or wider audience?
Ernesto stands out because of the extensive performance opportunities he has had experience with. The university’s music program is classically focused, while his side gigs and producing is popular music, and a couple years ago he combined songs he wrote into a theatrical musical, which was staged at the Electric Theater with other actors, stage hands, and musicians. He has exceptional talent in leading in musical settings.

An outstanding $85,000 investment in Internet Safety training, reaching 28 schools throughout Washington County in partnership with St. George City Police and the School District. They also provided the distribution of free t-shirts to elementary school children while delivering crucial online safety education alongside Utah Tech student-athletes and the mascot, Brooks the Bison in conjunction with Empowering Young Minds. They have branded UT and Brooks The Bison and engaged student-athletes in over 22 elementary schools. They even partnered with Athletics to bring the local elementary schools the past 3 years to the “Scream” game and attend the women’s kick-off/home opener WAC basketball game right before Christmas. Sigma Tau Delta has not only created multiple opportunities for its students to grow through an English conference they attended, but they also provide the campus with many different events including, but not limited to, the Rummage Sale and their year-round service project Poetry Pharmacy. Their initiative and willingness to participate in Campus events are outstanding with almost perfect attendance for all Inter-Club Council meetings, floats at the homecoming paradee, and much more. They have shown they are committed to this University and helping this campus flourish and thrive with an abundance of opportunities.

Through attendance of campus events like Homecoming activities, Campus to Community, and hosting their own events, Sigma Tau Delta is always showing their love for the campus. They are always hosting club meetings where they discuss their club business and host activities for club members. They have hosted a Rummage Sale for the campus community as well. I also always overhear personal invitations being extended when they are around, they are happy to include anyone.

I think outside of their weekly meetings and smaller scale events where they work together to be a stronger club, I have also found that they work hard to fundraise and support a conference trip for their club members. This conference is an educational experience where they get to network and collaborate with other Sigma Tau Delta societies around the nation.

They are constantly hosting fun and light hearted events for students to attend and destress at. They have also collaborated with other clubs and other organizations on campus, showing their love and commitment to the club and the campus.

They have shown strength and commitment through adapting to changes made for this year and losing a mentor while continuously growing and holding space on campus. They have overcome so much this year in a beautiful way and are still providing the students with a cultural space to exist comfortably.

They have hosted and collaborated on events with other clubs. They hosted a Dia De Los Muertos event that was beautiful and such a great space for those on campus that celebrate and partake, and even those who want a taste of the culture. They are all inclusive for students.

How has the nominee's unique character, enthusiasm, and positive attitude made a lasting impression on the Utah Tech community?
Oaklyn came to us a couple of years ago as a transfer student from SUU, and immediately made a strong impact on the entire student body because of her contagious and positive personality. She was a member of the Blaze Dance Team, actively supports all student and athletic events, and is one of the most genuinely funny people you'll ever meet. Everyone loves her, and she is one who bonds without even trying.
In what ways does the nominee confidently express their individuality?
She's hilarious, and not afraid to let her "embarrassing" moments bring light and fun to others. However, she's also genuinely interested in those around her, and totally confident in what she does.
How has the nominee contributed to the positive morale of faculty, staff, and students on campus?
Just by simply being herself, Oaklyn is a morale booster. She is always thinking about the "fun" and contagious positive vibes that she can give off to help everyone else be successful. And the cool thing is she did all of this while still maintaining a 3.69 GPA.
How does the nominee exemplify the “Trailblazer Spirit” at Utah Tech?
As stated above, she has grown to LOVE this school, even as a T-Bird transfer. She exemplifies everything about Trailblazer Spirit... from her clothing, to her employment on campus, her extracurricular involvement, and her academics. She's the real deal, and does all of this with a high gpa.

Joriz has hit the ground running and making friends quickly this year! As a transfer student from Kansas, he has jumped in fully to being a Trailblazer. You can find him at any event, always snapping great pictures, getting people to laugh behind the camera, and being kind to everyone. He truly makes fellow students feel seen on campus.

Joriz knows who he is, and he is never afraid to show it! Whether its competing for Mr. Trailblazer and sanging his heart out, or even just cheering on the team in the STAMPEDE. He is always a great time to be around.

Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
Logan is an extraordinarily talented student who has spent years perfecting his talent, as a vocalist, guitarist, actor, and active member of the studentbody.
How has the nominee demonstrated exemplary talent, skill, and dedication in their chosen discipline?
He is a transfer student this year, who attended one year at UVU but was unhappy there. He has found his place at Utah Tech and just last week performed for nearly an hour straight (fully memorized) as her presented classic rat pack classics from Frank Sinatra. Michael Buble and others at the annual Fire and Ice Gala. He has also performed for the Desert Sounds Event at the Clock Tower - sponsored by Katie Walker and the Ambassadors, as well as being an active participant in the Mic Drop Karaoke Event, and as an invited performer for the UTSA Casino Night.

As a first semester transfer student, Logan has not had the opportunity to be part of an ensemble, at least not yet, but he is considering auditioning in the future.

People are becoming more and more familiar with Logan just through his willingness to participate in such a variety of event types on campus. His voice and presence are outstanding, and he truly gives off "celebrity vibes"

Riley is the Victim Advocate for the St. George Police Department. She has worked directly with local law enforcement to provide victim services to the entire southern Utah community, including Utah Tech University students.

Riley participated in the 2024 Miss Utah Tech pageant. She also helped coordinate the Students against Trafficking club. She was an intern for the Digital Forensics Crime Lab at Utah Tech . She has always been the person people turn to who make their days better and brighter.

Riley is the embodiment of "Active Learning, Active Life". She has traveled for Utah Tech Study abroad programs in Greece, as well as for Amsterdam as an advocate for the Digital Forensics Crime Lab. For the past TWO years Kasee and her husband have been extraordinary in their support of Utah Tech, and especially the UT Cheer and Stunt Team. Traveling down from SLC (sometimes multiple times a week) to support their son.
In what ways has this family contributed to the Utah Tech community beyond supporting their own student(s)?
They bring a sense of positivity in support of the entire spirit squad (cheer, stunt, blaze, and mascot) preparing goodie bags, filming, securing donations, etc.
How has this family supported the St. George/Southwest Utah community as a whole?
Because of their positive and regular influence, other fans seated around them at sporting events became filled with that TRAILBLAZER athletic spirit and pride.

I've personally witnessed them interact with other students, faculty, staff, and community members on dozens of occasions. Their sheer presence elevates the crowd environment at events. How has the nominee served Utah Tech and the local community?
Andrew is a dedicated student who has made a deliberate effort to assist in service projects whenever available. He has tutored fellow students and family members in mathematics, which he has proven to be exceptional at. He earned his Eagle Scout award following a project raising and leveling headstones in the St. George Cemetery. Andrew has a regular schedule of yard care service in his local community, frequently mowing lawns, raking leaves, and pulling weeds for the elderly and those who are otherwise less able to care for their yards.
In what ways has the nominee actively contributed to multiple Utah Tech teams, clubs, or organizations?
Andrew is part of the Latter-Day Saint Student Association (LDSSA) through which he regularly attends religious classes (often 2-3 per semester), participates in outreach events, and travels to various conferences. He has likewise assisted the English Honors Society (Sigma Tau Delta) in various responsibilities, such as the Little Free Libraries project and constructing their poetry pharmacies.

Andrew believes firmly in living an active life, which, for him, includes physical activity, spiritual activity, and intellectual activity. He excels in his courses while working nearly full-time as a supervisor at Deseret Book. He maintains a consistent schedule volunteering to assist local Spanish speakers in their religious worship. There are few people who can balance as many things as Andrew does, while continuing to do them well. He remains humble despite coming to college with a stronger resume than most college graduates (including an impressive CE transcript of 45 credits and having been Valedictorian of his graduating class). It has been a pleasure to see the way he has found his identity during his college career as a giver of service, an involved and high-achieving student, and an unparalleled representative of Utah Tech University. He continues to make the school better by attending there.

How has this family shown extraordinary personal or academic support to their Utah Tech student(s)?
The Wyckoff family has four children: two have graduated with their BA/BS degrees, one is a current BS student, and one is a high schooler currently taking CE courses through the University. These students have had, and continue to have, great academic success, helping to contribute to an ever-growing identity of academic excellence for the University. The eldest of the Wyckoffs, Briley Wyckoff, graduated in 2023 as University Valedictorian, one of the Elite Eleven, a member of the Booth Honors Society, and a recipient of multiple other awards. She served as president of the English Honors Society, published work, and attended conferences throughout her time at Utah Tech. She is currently attending the University of Utah as a PhD student. The second graduate, Sydney Wyckoff Myers, also earned her degree in 2023--an interdisciplinary BS in Mathematics and Biology. She currently teaches middle school and high school students at St. George Academy. The current students, Andrew and Cameron, are finding great success in their paths toward data science and veterinary medicine. The family, particularly the parents (Scott and Shandi Wyckoff), are regular attendees at their students' performances, award dinners, and presentations. Even more important to the success of their students, however, is the day-to-day support the parents provide through continued encouragement and maintaining a home atmosphere that celebrates academic, social, and communal effort.

The family has been engaged regularly in helping students in the community and in their neighborhoods apply to Utah Tech, prepare themselves for success in a college environment, and provide tutoring for students who need additional support. Scott and Shandi were essential contributors to developing the Poetry Pharmacy Initiative with Sigma Tau Delta, which has expanded across campuses and communities inside and outside of Utah.
How has this family supported the St. George/Southwest Utah community as a whole?
The Wyckoffs have been heavily involved in the St. George community for over a decade. Scott Wyckoff serves as chair of the board of directors for both the Women and Children's Justice Center and the Rural Housing Development Corporation, closely connecting the Wyckoffs to local government and business leadership. He and his wife, Shandi, volunteer by teaching strengthening marriage courses for local couples, leading and participating in community choirs, and serving in leadership roles for religious youth programs. Prior to his work as a Senior Vice President of Health Catalyst, Scott was the director of strategic planning for the St. George Hospital and was responsible for the development and construction of the expansion/consolidation project, including the cancer center and the new women and children's building.

The Wyckoffs have had particular influence on the Music and English departments, working regularly with faculty from each department, most notably Dr. Ami Comeford and Dr. Timothy Francis. They have built many relationships with members of the Utah Tech Board of Directors and University Administration. They have provided meaningful support to specific students who have been welcomed into the family with open arms, leading to regular hosting of students who lack familial support and/or have academic needs.

The Wyckoffs have been closely connected to Utah Tech since 2017, when their first child became a student. Since then, they have maintained relationships with the University, regularly encouraging friends and family to apply to the school. Their family values align closely with the university's goals, particularly regarding being continual learners, engaging regularly and consistently in service, and encouraging environments of open communication and discourse. Members of the family have closely aligned themselves with educational endeavors and teaching opportunities, including instructing on study abroad programs and hosting and instructing music lessons and recitals. Collectively, the family holds six collegiate degrees, with two more in the process. They hold for themselves a high standard, through which they lift and encourage others to do the same.

The Wyckoffs are well-known in their community for their involvement and kindness. Scott and Shandi are fully engaged in administrative and leadership responsibilities, yet continue to make time for supporting their children and each other in educational, career, and personal endeavors. From hosting family dinners that include a variety of people (both related and not) to organizing and distributing resources to women and children in crisis, they exemplify the Trailblazer spirit in their neighborhood and community.

How has this family shown extraordinary personal or academic support to their Utah Tech student(s)?
Scott and Karen Taylor have support all four of their children as they attended UT University. Their two sons both received their associates degrees at UT while one daughter received her Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, before going on to graduate with her doctorate in physical therapy. Currently, their youngest daughter is attending UT majoring in Graphic/UI Design.
They personally drove all of their children to UT (a total of 4 years of daily drop offs and pick ups) while they attended classes as high school students. They have supported them through many projects and late nights study sessions. They have attended science events, coding events, sporting events, and orientations and graduations.
Their last child has needed extra personal help to stay enrolled at UT through her personal health challenges. Regular doctor visits to Salt Lake City and routine infusions at Intermountain Health have become a part of life to keep their daughter healthy and enrolled as a full time student at UT.

Scott and Karen both attended UT from 1992-1993 where they received their associates degrees. Karen served 2 years on the yearbooks staff and was a member of many campus clubs. Scott has supported UT is recent years, in providing input to the new engineering program.

Scott has worked as a civil engineer in St. George for 30+ years. He has specialized in engineering of water systems, pipelines, water tanks, and reuse water.He is the director of water services for the City of St. George and is a member of many boards and committees.
Karen had worked as a speech language pathologist in various schools of Washington County for 28+ years. She has mentored UT student interns who have an interest in speech language pathology.

Nui is currently the president of the Ambassador program and does a wonderful job leading our team of students that assist admissions to continue helping Utah Tech grow! He builds others up with his words and actions, and has a commitment to excellence. He is actively engaged on and off campus with service to prospective and current UT students.

As I mentioned, he is a part of the ambassador program, as well as a member of the club pickleball team. He helps to build the university and has a unique way of connecting others and networking through the game of pickleball.

Ambassadors are the face of the university. Nui is one that we send to help others understand the impact that Utah Tech can have on their lives, and is at all times the ideal representative of his family, friends, and university.

Joshua is a lead player in each group that he is involved in at the university, a testament to his high skill level. He constantly seeks any performing opportunity he is able and is able to be involved in university and community groups due to this. He is an incredibly talented and reliable soloist as well, which is utilized often within the groups he is involved with. He also spends time teaching and working with other performers often.
How has the nominee demonstrated exemplary talent, skill, and dedication in their chosen discipline?
As a music educator, Joshua has been in a teaching role with the university’s marching band, which is one of the most public groups on campus. Joshua will also be a representative of the university in an intercollegiate honor band this semester, which is a recommendation and audition based position, performing with high level students from across the country.

University Orchestra fall and winter concerts, both longstanding traditions with the university’s marching band, one outdoors and free to the public, and the other performing with guest artists. Presidential inauguration with the University Orchestra, where he performed for the inauguration of President Smeed. Multiple University Symphonic band concerts, featured as a soloist on a piece that was programmed for him to play. Multiple jazz concerts, also performing as a lead player and improv soloist. Brass Concert, where he was involved in a trumpet trio, and performed his own solo preparation. New music concerts, where he organized an ensemble to play his original compositions. Also expected to perform with Southwest Symphony early this semester.

Joshua has taken a high leadership position within the universities band department. He currently teaches the universities marching band, which he has done for two full seasons now, consistently runs brass and low brass sectionals, and gets many opportunities to serve the group. He is a reliable person within the music program who is always willing to assist and be involved where he is needed.

Joshua has a background performing with world class marching ensembles, and this experience has improved not only the marching band, but each ensemble that he is involved with. He has an incredibly high skill level and is very motivated to continue progressing, which not only improves the sound of the groups that he performs with, but increases motivation within those groups. Due to Josh’s connections within the national band community, many world class performers and educators are now not only aware of Utah tech, but consistently stay informed about concerts, performances, and events that Joshua is involved with.

Joshua has one of the highest levels of skill within the music department at Utah Tech, but more importantly, he is possibly the most intrinsically motivated performer that I have ever interacted with. He deserve Student of the Year Award. He saved the Veterans Lounge from being converted into office space by collecting 389 signatures from students, staff, and faculty at Utah Tech and negotiated with the Dean of Students to keep it until we could find a permanent alternative.
With over 200 veterans on campus, not including students who are not veterans but who are receiving education benefits from the VA and who also use the club space, that truly helped a lot of people.
He led the Veterans and Patriots Club as club president to rise from a Tier 3 to a Tier 1 club in just one semester by directing my vision for the club and recruiting the best people who were willing and able.
He made sure to include veteran students and non-veteran students in club events to create a culture that does seclude anyone, no matter what background they come from.
He also organized charity events two semesters in a row to collect and donate over 100 beanies to cancer patients in the Washington county area.

Domestic violence, homelessness, food and income insecurities academic concern and failure, life altering issues that didn’t sway my decision to come out on the right side of it all.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
From the start of my schooling I suffered from circumstances like homelessness, heartbreaking family problems and depression anxiety and suicidal ideation which set my academics way way off. Midterm last semester, failing almost all courses I’d enrolled in. I took most from those Fs to a b or better n I have pulled myself almost totally from my personal and academic journey and doom to show my light shines on and my give up—- I don’t know what give up is….
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
Stayed in school after all things gone wrong including academic suspension. Paid a 12 credit semester within my personal resources and brought my gpa from a 1.3 to a 2.6 got my own place . Left my brutal relationship and violence. Alone n with utah tech supporting me n my church I overcame inescapable doom to rise again

Asking for help. Follow through, made it all happen through never giving up no matter what I pushed forward

The Utah Tech Swing and Line Dance club has brought together so many different kinds of people! I constantly see leadership planning fun and consistent activities, and frequently collaborating with diverse clubs in order to meet new people and get a different sense of culture!
In what ways has this club enthusiastically supported campus life, social events, and participated in UTSA events?
I know they're combining with UT Stampede in order to promote the Women's basketball game tonight, and during club rush was out dancing shamelessly for everyone to see! I feel like we get more and more people every week.
How does this club provide educational and social opportunities for its members that contribute to the institutional reputation?
Last semester they hosted a beanie knitting party in order to make hats to donate to those in need. They also teach a class at the beginning of every event in order to make sure people feel included, and to help people who attend to improve and feel good about their experience.

Everyone in the presidency that I know of is a good full time student, and are actually very knowledgable about all things swing and line. They're definitely the presidency because they know what they're doing. They have plenty of members in the club to qualify, and I think it's an outstanding representation of what a Utah Tech club should look like.

A lot of clubs I've been involved in have been very inconsistent, have a weak sense of social bonds, or people are judged for being less knowledgable than other club members. This club has none of that. Everyone dances with everyone, and people are actually willing to give up their dancing time to help those standing on the side that may not understand. They're widely recognizable on campus, and try to reach out to other clubs in order to create those feelings of an open culture within the group. Everyone is so kind, and I genuinely think attending is the best part of my week.

How has this family shown extraordinary personal or academic support to their Utah Tech student(s)?
I know it's tacky to nominate my own parents, but I think they deserve it. My mom has done so much in order to get me through these last couple semesters, having transferred from UVU she has gone over and beyond to help me get my life back in order.
In what ways has this family contributed to the Utah Tech community beyond supporting their own student(s)?
My parents are also mentors for the Utah Tech Men's Basketball Team. Our boys are Noah and Preston this year:) I constantly hear them inviting them to activities, dinners, or even taking them grocery shopping when needed. We also constantly have more than just the two of them over, it's basically the entire team has been taken under their wings at this point. My dad is constantly on the front row of the basketball games, getting panned to by the camera because of how passionate he is about the team (and the refs, haha). My mom has helped and been on the board with Fire and Ice in the past, and is constantly engaged on campus to help plan events. I really could go on and on, but they're both graduates of Utah Tech (Dixie) and really love this University.
How has this family supported the St. George/Southwest Utah community as a whole?
My mom is a Make-A-Wish volunteer, which means she has the opportunity to meet with Make-A-Wish kids in the community regularly. My little brother had cancer and went through this, and I've really seen her take this opportunity and run with it having experienced it herself. My parents are also in a bishopric for a Young Single Adult ward in the community, and on top of having the basketball boys constantly at our house, we have many college students that we also feed sunday dinner, and I truly don't know how they do it. I have so much respect for how willing they are to invite people into their home.
How has this family’s involvement positively impacted other Utah Tech students or faculty members?
My dad has encouraged more than just me as a student, one of my friends is applying for the dental hygiene program, and he is a part of the program. He's encouraged her to reach out with any questions, help her through the application process, and so much more in order to help her be successful. It's really inspiring to watch how willing he is to help out the people who want to be successful and have the same passions as him.
In what ways has this family demonstrated a strong commitment to Utah Tech’s mission and values?
With my dad being an adjunct professor in the dental hygiene program, he gets a lot of opportunities to meet some incredible students. I can truly say he does support the active learning active life motto, as I've seen it outside of school and it reflects into his work. He constantly has interns he's willing to train (even if it's just for a short amount of time), he's willing to put in the work if it means their educational experience is improving. My mom has talked me through so much of my hard times when it deals with school, and has helped me become a better student and friend that would be able to promote this kind of welcoming environment. Working for the Events and Promotions committee, we constantly have a lot on our plates. She's even willing to take time out of her day to help me with any projects I may need an extra hand on. They're both incredible
Why do you believe this family is deserving of this award for extraordinary support?
I truly believe (and I wouldn't be saying this if I didn't really think it, again I think it's probably shallow to nominate my own parents) that they're deserving of this award. I see their commitment to this university, my education, the students at the university, and it even makes me want to be more involved. They never miss a basketball game, and they know every player and coach by name. Sometimes they even surprise me with how many people on this campus they know. When in meetings, I constantly get asked, "are you Ashton and Dani's girl? Like that Prince family?" It brings a lot of pride and makes me feel like I truly am valued in my work and on this campus, purely because of how reliable and how good of a reputation they have. They are absolutely my idols and I am so lucky to have parents who are so present and involved in this community and at this university.

How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
Sophia is extremely involved in Trailblazer Activities, such as the Battle of the Bands. She has taken a few courses from me, and while she is an excellent student she somehow finds the time to organize and attend many campus events.
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
She organized and supervised the Weiner Dog Run and Battle of the Bands, and those are just the two of which I'm aware. I know that she has done many more such events, and the events that she directs always end up very well-attended and being talked about among students, staff, and faculty for several days afterward.
In what ways has the nominee gone above and beyond their expected role within the organization, club, team, or department?
The amount of time Sophia puts in to her events is astounding.

How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
Mahealani Ikei is a student-athlete and a third-generation Japanese American from Hawaii. She plays volleyball for Utah Tech. The team finished a strong season, marking their first-ever Division I conference tournament championship appearance. This is a great achievement for the UT women's volleyball team.
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
Despite having busy schedule, Mahealani attended all classes (except for the game days), contributing to the development of fruitful in-class discussions. There were a total of 7 student group-led discussions, and they can select the best participant of the day, and Mahelani was selected seven times. It's an extraordinary achievement.
In what ways has the nominee gone above and beyond their expected role within the organization, club, team, or department?
Mahealani's teammates appreciate her positive and uplifting personality. In class, she showed great leadership and set a great example for her peers.

This student faces health challenges at her young age (rheumatoid arthritis), She also has gone through some personal at home challenges (her mom faces serious mental health struggles) and Briana has stepped in to help her younger siblings and has been doing what she can to survive and not let it overwhelm her.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
She's still attending classes, participating in events, is an active peer coach, was part of RHA. She continues to push herself even when her body and mind don't want her to, she keeps going.
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
She continues to look for opportunities to put her further into her chosen career path and connect with those who can also help her do that.

How has this family shown extraordinary personal or academic support to their Utah Tech student(s)?
From the start of 9th grade, my family didn’t just support my education—they engineered a pathway for it. They spent countless hours researching concurrent enrollment policies, degree requirements, and course sequencing so I could begin college classes as early as 9th grade. They met with counselors, principals, and the provost to get permissions for early college classes. I am so grateful that my family advocated for a plan that moved me beyond a traditional high school track into multiple degrees all while being a high school student.
Because my parent's support, I was able to complete a BS in Information Systems & Analytics (Cum Laude) along with an Associate’s in Business Management (high honors) and certificates in Data Analytics, Applied Statistics, and Finance & Analytics—all while still in high school. The past 3.5 years have been an amazing experience that I owe to my mom and dad.
In what ways has this family contributed to the Utah Tech community beyond supporting their own student(s)?
My dad John Haller has lectured on AI at the University and has been a supporter by serving on the Engineering Business Committee. He also taught Entrepreneurship for a year, which really inspired me. My dad has also housed two companies at Atwood Innovation Plaza, one of which closed it's series A this past year. My mom, Jodi Haller serves as the Board Chair for Success Academy and been active in tech pipeline advocacy with the University.
How has this family supported the St. George/Southwest Utah community as a whole?
As I mentioned, my mom has been an advocate for high tech education and jobs at the University, but also for the whole region. She started the 'So. Utah Tech Pipeline' group on linked-in to connect educators, students, and business together. She also has helped me with "mathup Utah" a movement to inspire young people with advanced math to business leaders. My dad also received the Chamber of Commerce "Trailblazer Award" for his tech start-up company beatBread that funds music artist based on his algorithm.
How has this family’s involvement positively impacted other Utah Tech students or faculty members?
The cool thing about my family being involved in the Utah Tech pipeline is that my dad's company beatBread has been able to hire several students in the past few years giving them sustainable tech wages straight out of college. John has also worked with faculty members on projects and research. John served on the hiring committee for the new Dean of Engineering.
In what ways has this family demonstrated a strong commitment to Utah Tech’s mission and values?
The Haller family represents innovation and entrepreneurship in action as since moving to St George, they have been involved in multiple start-ups involving patented data models hiring local students and growing the economy. Because of the ecosystem created by the UT mission -- the Haller family isn't just living the dream, but empowering the next generations as I am evidence to their comittment of providing jobs and 'keeping our kids here'.
Why do you believe this family is deserving of this award for extraordinary support?
I think the Haller family is deserving of this award as they have exemplified the dream of creating "Tech" companies from the ground up in St George, while teaching and mentoring students with not only high paying jobs, but advocating for the curriculum that adds value to the economy. I am grateful to be the example of what's possible by embracing all the programs Utah Tech has to offer! I believe that this award could be a wonderful springboard to inspire many other students and business owners to get involved in the Tech pipeline and growing Tech economy for us kids.

What significant personal obstacles has the nominee faced during their time at Utah Tech?
Johana Florian has worked to carry forward amidst significant personal obstacles during her time at Utah Tech. From her start as a Success Academy student with concurrent enrollment to today with her pursuit of the bachelor's in dance, she has taken on challenges to advance her education and build community along the way through academic and creative research as well as performance opportunities. In a previous semester when she encountered a significant mental struggle, she practiced GRIT and perseverance to endure and even prevail. As an upper-level student, she is attentive to her peers and conscious of contributing to environments that are supportive and holistic.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
Johana demonstrates resilience by consistently taking ownership in her learning by showing up with dedication, effort, and discipline, even when it is difficult. She demonstrates determination as she strives to give her full effort in everything she does, seeking to be reliable and consistent for herself, her peers, and her teachers. Specific examples of her actions would be joining the Utah Tech Dance Ensemble and Ballroom Team, joining study abroad to Brazil, and developing a choreographic research endeavor- all showcasing her perseverance and investment in long-term projects that demonstrate her commitment to pressing forward amidst challenges. Within these projects, she carries a mindset of curiosity and intent to see things to completion. During a particularly challenging semester, Johana showed GRIT and determination in overcoming her obstacles by continuing to attend classes and rehearsals, completing her assignments, and giving whatever effort she had for that day, even when it felt incredibly hard.
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
Despite the challenges Johana faces, she continues to succeed educationally, maintaining excellent grades in her classes. She maintains high standards for herself, works to manage her time carefully, and attends to the quality of her work as she sees this as a reflection of her respect for learning. She has been selected to represent the University at the American College Dance Association regional conference in 2025, and Johana recently presented a poster with her research at the Utah Dance Education Organization fall conference. She has been a multi-year scholarship student, recognized for her artistic talents and academic performance.
What strategies or qualities has the nominee used to find strength and keep moving forward?
Johana incorporates a variety of strategies and qualities to help support her academic work and holistic life approach. She does not aim to do the bare minimum; instead, she pushes herself to excel by exploring curiosities beyond class requirements and developing her interests more deeply. This supports her connections in the classroom to the material, her classmates, and the professors. Johana also integrates her learning into the work she does in our local community and builds connection both on campus and out in the world (as seen through her work, study abroad, conferences, and other support systems). She continually seeks new perspectives and opportunities to grow as a learner and as a person. Her work ethic is a personal strength employed not just one moment of challenge but in the everyday commitments she makes to keep showing up. This presence is consistent even in times when she is tired, overwhelmed, or struggling mentally.
How has the nominee’s journey impacted others in the Utah Tech community?
By connecting with community in the dance program and the university at large, Johana is both supported by and supports her peers. I have seen her explain with patience to other classmates when they do not understand content as well as provide coping strategies for when the world feels like it's too much. I have witnessed her ask clarifying questions as well as provide thoughtful insights from her experiences in support of the class content. Her work as a tutor in the Writing Center informs her own writing and makes her an easy conversation partner for peers with questions. Program Director Sara Gallo also attests to Johana's leadership; during rehearsals, Sara observed the way that Johana can direct the group clearly and with kindness as she works to build relationship among the dancers and community (helping them have fun along the way, too...). Johana's experiences as a student inform her leadership, understanding that her peer students have more going on than meets the eye and that they have additional commitments outside of school.

In sum, Johana is motivated by curiosity, dedication, and the belief that effort matters. These qualities are admirable representations of resilience and determination. How has this family shown extraordinary personal or academic support to their Utah Tech student(s)?
Okay this one is special. Healthy dad had surprise health issues in Oct.2025 and almost didn't make it. On the road to recovery and doing better. Son is a UT lacrosse player from Texas and loves UT. Many sacrifices to make dues to play the sport he loves for a School and City he loves. Lifetime friends have been made through his experience and many more to come.
In what ways has this family contributed to the Utah Tech community beyond supporting their own student(s)?
Our Son Started a Bible study a couple months ago and growing. Too many to name that this has impacted. Also, we (Wife) have scheduled all travel arrangements for the lacrosse team out of town games. Huge Task! Lots of Money.
How has this family supported the St. George/Southwest Utah community as a whole?
Son involved in many activities in the area to help recruit more students to UT.

Son has helped several new students in the day to day UT experience to feel more at home.

Our Son and family of 7 (2 sets of twins and one more) are on board through this journey which has been awesome. He is a sophomore UT Lacrosse player who loves his coaches and teammates and with that we love the same.

Out of State Family from Texas supporting an awesome school through a growing lacrosse program and many sacrifices to support the school.

Jhonny Druding
What significant personal obstacles has the nominee faced during their time at Utah Tech?
Jhonny Druding started school in Fall 2021 under difficult medical conditions brought upon by exposure to burn pits in Bagram, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003. By 2019 her sickness grew significantly. Even though her pain and illness were brought somewhat under control with medication, the illness never really stabilized.
Jhonny continued to push through and self-medicate when she first attended Utah Tech. She was hoping the illness and pain would pass, but her condition kept getting worse.
By Spring 2022, Jhonny was missing a lot of class due to extreme illness. She faced a significant challenge that semester when her husband literally dropped dead in front of her on April 19th, 2022. Jhonny immediately called 911 and began CPR. She didn’t stop for seven minutes—the longest seven minutes of her life—until a police officer arrived. The officer used a defibrillator twice until the paramedics arrived and took over. Her husband was shocked another 5 times over the next 35 minutes in an attempt to get a rhythm back. Her husband miraculously survived, but Jhonny had a difficult time enduring the emotional toll of facing the potential loss of her husband.
Yet Jhonny continued on. She attended school in Fall 2022 while growing more and more sick. As she clawed through that fall semester, Jhonny found her illness worsen. It culminated in three ER trips that December and resulted in a diagnosis of a difficult medical condition. She immediately started infusion treatments to try to control her worsening state.
Yet Jhonny continued on. She attended spring 2023 and endured an exhausting cycle of good and bad days. The following year was the most difficult time for her. Jhonny’s attendance and grades slowly started taking a hit. By Fall 2023, she was so sick that she had to drop out of school early on in the semester.
Her health degraded so significantly that by December 2023 she was hospitalized and stayed there for about a month until she had life-saving surgery in mid-January 2024. Recovery was physically and mentally draining. It took her a while to recover from her illness and surgery, and she was unable to attend school that spring.
Yet Jhonny continued on. She didn’t quite have the stamina to be a full-time student, but she still went back to school part-time in fall 2024. Jhonny continued to have health challenges and there were many reasons to quit; however, Jhonny enrolled as a full-time student in spring 2025 and continued on. She is now graduating this semester with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
Jhonny wanted to quit school countless times. Life has been hard since she began school, but she gritted in out with a hope and focus rarely seen in many others.
There were days she told herself she could “just walk away from school, get some simple minimum-wage job, clock in, clock out, and be done. No exams. No presentations. No studying for hours every night. When your shift ends, you go home — and that’s it. No stress hanging over your head.” During the worst of her illness, those thoughts were really appealing.
However, Jhonny also knew what she wanted in life. She needs to feel like what she’s doing matters and that she’s growing. She knew that quitting would give her temporary relief, but she would be disappointed in herself and her future in the long term.
Jhonny kept going with a deep need to be proud of herself as a motivating power. She wants to do hard things. She wants to excel at complicated tasks. She wants a career where she’s appreciated and where her work has weight. She knows finishing her education would keep that door open—and quitting would close it.
During the hardest stretch in 2023, Jhonny was getting sicker and sicker, missing classes, trying to study while her body was completely fighting her. It took everything she had just to stay enrolled. She told her husband multiple times that she wanted to quit. Her husband supported her through all of it—reminding her who she was when she got too exhausted to remember her goals and aspirations. “Having someone believe in you when you’re barely holding on makes a huge difference!”
Coming back in Fall 2024 after surgery was another mountain to climb. Jhonny hadn’t been in school for about a year, and it had been three years since she took the Introduction to Accounting course. It felt like starting over. It felt like the years of suffering caused the information to drain out of her memory. Jhonny had to relearn everything, which was a humbling, frustrating, and hard experience. Johnny still stayed in school.
Jhonny stayed, not because it was easy, not because she wasn’t scared, but because she wants to finish what she started. She wants to look back at this chapter—the illnesses, the surgeries, the setbacks—and say she didn’t let it define the ending.
Jhonny remembers she was close to quitting more times than she can count, but she wanted the version of her life of earning her degree and having a great career more than she wanted the relief that would come from giving up.
In what ways has the nominee succeeded in their educational pursuits despite these challenges?
Jhonny will graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with a current GPA of 3.44!
Jhonny is mostly better, but not fully. She’s still sick. Every single day takes effort. Just maintaining a physical presence in class can be hard for her. There’s a constant mental strain that never really shuts off—a fear in the back of her mind that medical devices could fail or something completely random and out of her control could happen. The fear that these things can happen in public, in class, in front of everyone never really leaves her.
Jhonny now travels with extra supplies, extra plans, and extra contingencies. She’s always anticipating failure, even when things are fine. All of this is exhausting in a way that’s hard for her to explain, but being physically present matters to her. It matters for her own sense of normalcy, and it matters to the people she attends school with—especially in our 4000-level classes where the workload is heavy and group projects are constant.
Even when it’s hard, even when her body feels unreliable and her mind is tired, Jhonny chooses to be in class. Not perfectly. Not effortlessly. But intentionally. She is becoming more resilient and fighting with grit.
What strategies or qualities has the nominee used to find strength and keep moving forward?
Jhonny learned something when 19 years old in basic training that she’s carried with her ever since: “You don’t finish a 23-mile ruck march in four minutes. You finish it by putting one foot in front of the other … and then doing it again. That’s it. That’s the secret. That’s exactly how she got through her illness and everything that came with it.
She didn’t focus on graduating; she focused on the next assignment, the next class, the next week. She set very small goals that turned into bigger goals. Those goals turned into semesters. And those semesters turned into a Bachelor of Science in Accounting!
Johnny’s husband has been her greatest support without question. He championed her every single day—through sickness, surgery, and recovery. When she was exhausted, in pain, discouraged, or just mentally worn down, he carried strength for her when she didn’t seem to have it. He reminded her to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Jhonny’s dogs were also an unexpected source of strength. Their unconditional love—and the fact that they needed her—helped pull her through physical therapy and post-surgery recovery. Jhonny’s goal to rehabilitate was simple: take the dogs on two walks a day. She worked in rehab until she could do that consistently. She wanted to get there for them and for herself, but honestly, mostly for them. Having something outside herself to care for kept her moving.
Jhonny also relied on strength she built long before this chapter of her life. She’s faced hard things before. She’s served her country. She’s endured combat. She’s had to mentally heal from experiences most people never see. Because of these things, she knew she was capable of doing hard things. She knew she could persevere. She knew that if she kept succeeding at the tiny goals, eventually they would add up to something bigger. And they did!
Jhonny’s not fully healed—she still needs one more surgery. She’s been putting it off and just managing the symptoms of her condition because she’s so close to graduating. Her final surgery is scheduled for the week of graduation. It’s been a lot, but she’s almost at the finish line, in more ways than one.
How has the nominee’s journey impacted others in the Utah Tech community?
Jhonny readily jumped into the Veterans club when she started school in fall 2021. She quickly sacrificed her time and gave her talents to help the club cabinet further the club’s goals and purposes. She remained active at club events and in mentoring other club members even though her health worsened and the club had moments of fledging participating. Her charisma and natural leadership traits served as the glue in many instances.
Jhonny made a conscious decision to stay positive and uplift others even while going through her own challenges. She’s always wanted to be someone who brings light into a room—someone who makes you smile; someone whose presence makes your day a little better. Jhonny tries to be that kind of person because she knows how much she needs those kinds of people in her own life. She believes that if she needs that kind of encouragement, other people probably do too.
Every class in her senior year is hard. Jhonny believes teamwork makes the dream work, and she takes that seriously. She wants to show up. She wants to be dependable. She wants to be the kind of teammate people can count on. Whether in class or studying with a group, Jhonny brings all that she believes to other students at Utah Tech.
Jhonny makes an effort to be generous and truthful with her compliments of other students. She listens when people are stressed. She shows up for her teammates. She tries to be steady and encouraging, even on days when she’s struggling internally. Being a source of light for others actually helped her stay strong herself.
Her illness and trials reminded her that even when she felt physically weak or mentally drained, she could still offer something meaningful. She could still contribute. She could still lift someone else up. She is pleased to be a part of the VITA program this semester in which she can serve her fellow students and the community by helping them file their annual taxes.
Why do you believe this nominee deserves the Grit Award?
Jhonny is the definition of grit. As an excellent student in a challenging degree program, she endured a life-threatening illness, braved the devastating loss and recovery of her husband’s life, and ridden the rollercoaster of physical, mental, and emotional pain. Jhonny has trod the deep waters of anxiety and found calm on the shores of loving arms and caring peers. Jhonny has not baulked under the strain of hospitalization and rehabilitation. She rose as a pillar of light and positivity to help bring joy and friendship to others.
Jhonny accomplished these things because she believes we need each other. She’s grateful for the encouragement she receives and seeks to encourage others. Her willingness to turn to her ever nurturing husband, her contributions among friends at Utah Tech, and her formidable belief that a person will achieve by placing one step in front of the other and gritting it out, are an example for us all.
Jhonny could have justified reasons to quit, to become bitter, and to be unfriendly and self-centered. Instead, Jhonny attended Utah Tech with a contagious smile and undaunted support for other students. Jhonny has demonstrated grit by pressing on through the dark clouds of uncertainty and surrender. She would not allow herself to be lost amid the turmoil of doubt and fear. She would not relent in her pursuit of achievement and progress. She would not quit fighting for her hopes and dreams. She never will!

LGBTQSO the club
How has this club demonstrated consistent strength, campus activity, and a commitment to serving both its members and the broader Utah Tech community?
LGBTQSO is consistently on top of marketing, collaborations, and execution. They plan and prepare more than any other club in my opinion. As VP of Clubs, I see their meeting requests come in months in advance. I have seen they have meetings with other clubs to plan collaborations. They have a newsletter group to keep members informed of events for the whole month. The events the hold are a safe space for members of the LGBTQ community, but their events are open to all and so fun for anyone to come to.
In what ways has this club enthusiastically supported campus life, social events, and participated in UTSA events?
They uplift other clubs and repost their content consistently. They have attended every club event, including club rush, night rush, the homecoming parade, etc. They also held the drag show, which reached so many students at Utah Tech and replaced our typical Wednesday event. They have collaborated with so many people, drawing more attention to smaller clubs and reaching a large population of students.
How does this club provide educational and social opportunities for its members that contribute to the institutional reputation?
They hold queer brunches, sometimes accompanied by a speaker. They repost informative information about the LGBTQ community on their Instagram. Most importantly, they have countless social opportunities open to all that they market extremely well, including fliers, A-Frames, Instagram posts, newsletters, etc. You would think they are a part of the school with how well they market.
How does this club maintain its charter through Utah Tech’s Inter Club Council (ICC)?
They have completed many service hours and reported them, have had consistent events with one if not more a week, had many members ranging up to hundred of people at events, attended ICC biweekly, all the requirements to not only keep them chartered but also make them a tier one club, the highest recognition we give.
What impact has this club made on campus culture or student life at Utah Tech?
When we talk about student belonging, there is no better club to point to than LGBTQSO. They provide a positive, welcoming environment for all and an especially necessary space for members of the LGBTQ community. These events uplift the student population, especially for incoming freshman who are in a new space and need to find support. They also contribute to the local community, having regular meetings at encircle and hosting monthly brunches for all people to attend. They are a necessary group to our campus culture and student life.
Why do you believe this club deserves to be recognized as the Student Club of the Year?
As VP of Clubs, I get to see how all clubs operate and manage themselves. Truly, no one is doing it like LGBTQSO. They had collabs for February planned out in October. They have meeting requests sent in so far in advance, proof that they care and plan extremely well. They market and reach new people all the time. They have consistent members both at the school and in the community. They have had trials (ex. the drag show) and yet they adapt and push through. How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
Michael is one to give it his all in everything he does. He is involved in so much, including UTSA Clubs, working for dining services, volunteering at so many events, starting his own club, and so much more. He puts in well over the hours he needs to for the roles he is in and is on the campus all day doing various things to stay involved. He truly is above and beyond.
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
He started a Roblox club, fostering a consistent and growing community that is quickly one of the most popular on campus. His club has brought more attention to the school as well with viral posts reaching around a million views and over 100k likes. He also brings such a positive attitude wherever he goes on campus, making all the communities he is in feel uplifted.
In what ways has the nominee gone above and beyond their expected role within the organization, club, team, or department?
Michael was on UTSA Clubs as a club representative. His position was a 5 hour position and he could've easily just stuck to just his required hours and responsibilities. But Michael instead was volunteering at as many Student Life events as possible. He supported so many events among the UTSA branches. He makes such an effort to befriend anyone he meets too, which is incredibly admirable.
How have the nominee’s efforts strengthened or elevated their organization, club, team, or department?
Already, we reference Michael as an example of what a well-involved member of UTSA looks like. Many people on clubs feel a disconnect from the rest of UTSA because we are in a separate building and don't interact as much, but when we talk about how to get more involved and included we talk about Michael. His actions and genuine all-in mentality are lasting.
How has the nominee’s work within this group reflected positively on Utah Tech as a whole?
Michael is the embodiment of positivity, hard work, inclusion, dedication, involvement, respect, grit, and friendship. He is an amazing representative of the school. Anyone who meets him outside of the school would have nothing short of a positive interaction.

Michael is the most involved person I can think of. From volunteering to committing 120% to his communities, he does it all. I look up to him in all that he does and I think he is the best example of what this award means.

Lily has always been so involved on campus and matches it with her endless energy and bubbly personality. She is so funny and brings joy and humor to whatever she does, whether it be in a club, in a class, or just walking around campus.
In what ways does the nominee confidently express their individuality?
Lily is never afraid to be herself and her authenticity is what makes her such a great person to hang out with. Her personality has stood out in countless ways, especially through her leadership roles and everyday interactions. Lily doesn’t just organize events, she just creates these experiences that are welcoming and fun. She remembers names, checks in on members, and always makes sure new students never feel left out. In class, she isn’t afraid to speak up, ask thoughtful questions, or lighten the mood with a joke, which is always nice for both peers and professors to feel more connected and engaged in my opinion.

With her heavy involvement, Lily makes connections with everyone on campus everyday. She always builds genuine connections with people from all areas of campus life, which usually means her going out of her way to introduce students to one another or encourage someone to join a club or attend an event. She uplifts others through simple but meaningful actions, celebrating others’ successes loudly and proudly and bringing positivity into rooms that need it most.

Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
Kaytlynn is a third year member of the Ballroom Dance Team. She is an excellent dancer and team leader. She is a member of our Ballroom Council and is over our social media. Kaytlynn is also trained in other genre's of dance which is a real benifit to our team. She is very teachable and always willing to learn and try new things. She is a real asset to our team.
How has the nominee demonstrated exemplary talent, skill, and dedication in their chosen discipline?
As a member of the Ballroom Team Kaytlynn travels around Washington county to public schools sharing a duel message of kindness, and the importance of staying active for physical and mental heath. At High Schools we also share Utah Tech's philosophy of Active Learning Active Life as we recruit graduating seniors to our school.
In what ways has the nominee served as a representative of Utah Tech in the public eye through performances or entertainment?
Kaytlynn has performed in assemblies at six different elementary schools and one High School. We performed as a team at an assisted living facility. She performed at the Fall Spectacular as a member of the Ballroom Team, and will play a large roll in the upcoming Ballroom Dance Concert.
Can you list some of the performance opportunities the nominee has had this school year?
Kaytlynn has been a council member of the Ballroom Dance Team for the last two years. She has been over social media and works hard to advertise for our team. She also makes sure each member of our team feels special on their birthday by doing a special post for them. She has made promotional videos for our team as well. Kaytlynn arrives on time to our early morning practices. She works hard and is always prepared! She is willing and able to dance every sytle of Ballroom that we throw at her.

Kaytlynn has impacted the Utah Tech community by performing with our team at various University events, at public schools, and on tour. She has traveled with us to Japan, Brazil, and at the end of this semester to Canada to share our message and recruit for Utah Tech.

How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
Matt shows excellent commitment as the President of the Veterans and Patriots Club as an experienced leader. He initially began as the secretary of a fledging the club in the fall where he immediately brought organization and accountability to club meetings and activities. Matt mentored and developed the club leadership and kept them on track to grow club membership and participation. Matt continues as the club president this spring by emphasizing recording keeping, tracking members, organizing events, and keeping his cabinet focused on bringing active learning active life experiences to club members and Utah Tech students. Matt was the backbone and the majority of the reason for the club's success in being elevated to tier one status this past spring.
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
Matt leads the Veterans and Patriots Club in service events that improve campus life, such as a traditional campus cleanup events held each semester, as well as developing partnerships with other clubs on campus. He facilitates activities that provide students in other campus clubs opportunities to serve others, such as knitting beanies for cancer patients. Matt is a Veteran and helps improve the image of Veterans with students on campus through friendship, mentoring, and professionalism.

Matt was not the club leader when he joined the club; however, he was a leader in the US Army which gave him a rare skillset as a Utah Tech student. His natural leadership and influence made him the true club leader through action and influence. Through his mentorship and leadership, the Veterans and Patriots Club excelled in meaningful experiences that contributed to elevating the club to tier one status and promoting active learning, active life.

The Veterans and Patriots club is now a tier one club which held 10 events in the fall which were attended by over 150 attendees. This spring, Matt is spearheading 9 executed or planned events with an expectation to provide meaningful service and morale-boosting events to foster increased camaraderie within the club.

For three semesters, Sam has been a dedicated and high-performing member of FUSION, fully committing to the demanding rehearsal, performance, and tour schedule while maintaining full-time academic enrollment at Utah Tech University. As the PR and Marketing Representative for FUSION within the Utah Tech Entertainment Alliance, Sam has taken full ownership of the organization’s public presence. Why do you believe this nominee is deserving of this award for outstanding service and involvement at Utah Tech?
To put it frankly, Axuray is dedicated, hard working, and exponentially remarkable. She is skilled and talented beyond compare, yet humble and compassionate. She is able to bring joy to others by simply doing what she loves, and does best: performing. Mia has danced her whole life, and effortlessly puts her heart and soul into every step that she takes. The passion she moves with, and work she puts into being a master at her craft is an honor to get to experience.
How has the nominee demonstrated exemplary talent, skill, and dedication in their chosen discipline?
Throughout Axuray's time on the Blaze Dance Team, she has had the opportunity to represent the University at events at local elementary schools, fundraisers off campus for the team and, even on international recruitment trips for the university in both Japan and Spain. Her dedication for suicide prevention is unmatched, helping to get both the dance and cheer teams QPR certified every year. She has also competed in the Miss Utah Tech pageant and is excited to help out with the Prom Possibilities event soon. Axuray is an excellent example of what the pride of our university stands for and never fails to bring up how much it means to be able to build new paths as a Trailblazer.
In what ways has the nominee served as a representative of Utah Tech in the public eye through performances or entertainment?
Axuray was able to travel to Spain and perform at multiple high schools and universities to show just how great it is to be a student at Utah Tech. She had the opportunity to perform her Miss Utah solo about having hope and never giving up. She has also been able to perform at Welcome Wednesday, the Senior Games, every tailgate event for the community, all home football games, every home basketball game, basketball games in Hawaii, Region Drill, and of course for our virtual nationals and collegiate championship in Orlando, Florida.
Can you list some of the performance opportunities the nominee has had this school year?
Axuray has been on the Blaze Dance Team for 4 years now, and served a mission in the middle of it. She takes every opportunity she can to express her love and gratitude for not only her teammates but for her school as well. She loves to proudly wear her UT and Blaze gear to any and all events that she can, in hopes it will spark a conversation about something she holds so dearly in her heart. Axuray is our loudest voice and will always be screaming for you to keep going.
How has the nominee demonstrated a strong commitment to a Utah Tech group, ensemble, or department?
The fiery passion in every hip hop routine, and tear-jerking emotion in every lyrical performance, keeps all eyes on Axuray in every routine that she is in. She can manage to pull anyone's attention with one swift movement, and hold that attention for longer than you would ever think. Axuray has the capabilities to draw you in as the observer, and keep you there without even trying. Each and every performance in Spain, left her with a flock of people rushing to her side to give her a compliment and ask for a picture with her. The Blaze clinics leave Axuray with a crowd of young women dying to learn from her and be just like her when they grow up. But most importantly, her highlighted moments in the dance teams competition routines, surely helped the Blaze create such beautiful masterpieces for nationals. Axuray emulates exactly what an experienced entertainer should do: she makes the people that get the opportunity to watch her, feel something. Whether that is joy, sadness, longing, peace, passion, or love, she has the talent to recreate it. It is a truly beautiful experience to get to watch someone live so purely, and wholeheartedly themself, while making it look so angelic all at the same time. Axuray is someone that will be an entertainer for the rest of her life and will not ever limit herself to it simply a title or award, but rather a way to live.

How has the nominee served Utah Tech and the local community?
Adi has been on the Blaze Dance Team, serving the community for a total of 4 years. She has volunteered at the Senior Games, been a part of every event on campus, and has served at local animal shelters as she learns about her career field in Veterinary medicine. She has shown how dedicated she is to the community, but also to her passion of dance and education.
In what ways has the nominee actively contributed to multiple Utah Tech teams, clubs, or organizations?
Being on Blaze, Adi has had the opportunity to perform at and be involved in homecoming week activities, football and basketball games both home and away, and has competed with the ballroom team winning dozens of awards. She has put in extra hours for her studies and has never let her full schedule of service and clubs take away from her degree in Veterinary Medicine.
How does the nominee advocate for Utah Tech and its mission?
Adi takes the motto of "active learning, active life," very seriously. She is never, not on the go. Between school, work at the animal shelter, teaching dance, and the Blaze, she has a packed life. She is active in her love for dance and also her passion for knowledge. She is known to be the girl that on her few moments of free time, will go on a hike to listen to music she has a dance to or to solidify something she studied in organic chemistry that day. She allows the beautiful place we get to live in, to help her become the best version of herself so that she can better cater to those around her.
In what ways does the nominee demonstrate leadership that enhances student success and benefits the university community?
With this being Adi's 4th year on the Blaze, she is a captain that is fearlessly leading the team into new territory. Every year the program grows, and new goals are created and surpassed. This year, as we trailblaze our path to a new national competition, Adi has been the constant voice of comfort for the team. Every nerve about a new place, every fear about success, every worry about a performance, has been settled by our amazing Adi. She has lead the team by example, showing that hard work and preparation, leaves no room for worry and that they are ready, and just need to have confidence in themselves. Adi has helped our team find who they are and have pushed them to become even better. Without Adi, a 2nd National title for the Blaze and Utah Tech would not feel so close within our reach.

Adi is one of a kind. She is strong, smart, dedicated, compassionate, knowledgable, coachable, positive, and most of all- kind. There is nothing that she wouldn't do for this community or her team. She knows the work that it takes to create a village that has one common goal and she is determined to bring success to the school that she loves so much. If Adi could be in more than one place at once to help others, she would be and that is what makes Adi who she is. She is a true Trailblazer and we could not be more proud of the soon to be doctor, dancer, and student that she is.

To fund his dream of a higher education, he has consistently balanced the demands of a full-time course load with two jobs. This relentless work schedule is a necessity, as he is solely responsible for his tuition, housing, groceries, and all associated educational expenses. Beyond financial barriers, Martize has faced significant logistical hurdles, including limited transportation. Yet, regardless of the distance or the hour, he finds a way to show up for his on-campus responsibilities and his off-campus employment without fail.
How has the nominee demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles?
Martize does not just "endure" challenges; he attacks them with a strategic mindset. When obstacles appear insurmountable, his first instinct is to seek a path forward rather than give up. He demonstrates exceptional self-advocacy by consistently attending professor office hours and proactively meeting with student resource staff. His resilience is most evident in his refusal to let "no" be the final answer—if a financial barrier arises, he immediately sits down to draft a new plan to overcome it. I believe Martize deserves this award because he doesn't just have grit; he defines it every single day. To me, Martize represents what the word GRIT truly stands for at Utah Tech:
G – Growth Mindset: Martize refuses to be a victim of his circumstances. Instead of seeing a lack of transportation or a financial barrier as a dead end, he sees it as a problem to be solved through strategy and hard work.
R – Resourcefulness: Being an independent, first-generation student means building your own map. Martize has mastered the art of "using his village," from the Student Resource staff to Case Management, turning every available resource into a stepping stone toward his degree.
I – Intentionality: Nothing in Martize’s life happens by accident. From working two jobs to attending every office hour, his actions are purposeful. He isn't just trying to "get by"; he is intentionally building a future.

How has the nominee shown extraordinary commitment within their organization, club, team, or department at Utah Tech?
Katie is extremely dedicated to everything she does. She is a Presidency member of the Student Ambassadors, UMAC Intern, and Trailblazer Queen!
What impactful contributions has the nominee made that extended beyond their organization and positively influenced the entire campus community?
In her role as VP of Community Engagement she intentionally creates and leads experiences that are geared on servicing her campus and community. The last 2 years her and her team have organized volunteer events to give ambassadors first hand opportunities to give back. That includes working with on campus partners or community events that help connect Utah Techs Missions to residents of Saint George.
In what ways has the nominee gone above and beyond their expected role within the organization, club, team, or department?
I never have to worry about Katie getting the job done. She is one of the most reliable and diligent Ambassadors I have on my team! She is never afraid to speak up for what is right for our team. She will always fight for what is best for the program.
How have the nominee’s efforts strengthened or elevated their organization, club, team, or department?
Katies organization is something that will benefit the Ambassadors long down the road. It is not easy managing all of th volunteer request that come in, but she does it with ease. Her communication and expectations make it so the program will thrive even after her graduation.
How has the nominee’s work within this group reflected positively on Utah Tech as a whole?
Katie is practically a celebrity at Utah Tech. She is never afraid to stand out and put herself out there. Katie is a confident and outgoing leader that shows up with kindness and determination to any event or task. Her grit has helped Utah Tech accomplish many things and will benefit anyone who has her on their team.

Katie deserves this more then anyone I know. Her commitment to Utah Tech shows in every action she makes. Katie is someone who not only does amazing things now but will continue to do so once she is an Alumni.

How has this club demonstrated consistent strength, campus activity, and a commitment to serving both its members and the broader Utah Tech community?
Pickleball National Titles: Bringing home the Mixed Doubles National Champion Title (Liam Duffin and Mary Monson) and the Women's Doubles National Champion Title (Mary Monson and Lauren Mercado) at the APP National Championship is a massive feat. Ranking three teams among the top in the nation cements UT as a pickleball hub.
UT Pickleball is also the first ever world collegiate pickleball champion after beating team India in the 2025 World Collegiate PPA Championship.

Continues to host club nights on the HPC roof with open participation for students. The team also hosts multiple fundraisers and partner events with Summit Gym and now Black Desert Resort.

UT Club Pickleball hosts youth events, training the communities youth and next generation of pickleball. The team also offers events where members of the community can compete against our world champion athletes as part of fundraisers and community engagement.
